The Sleep Charity

Based in the United Kingdom, the Sleep Charity provides advice and encourages people to sleep better. It began as the Children’s Sleep Charity with a goal of giving parents and carers in England and Wales access to quality sleep support. In 2019, they rebranded to the Sleep Charity reflecting their efforts to bring quality sleep support to everyone in the United Kingdom.

They aim to:

  • Provide access to high quality information and advice to deal with most sleep issues
  • To ensure everyone understands the value of a good night’s sleep
  • To campaign for improvements to the support available
  • Make a positive difference to the lives of those they work with by campaigning for improvement to the support available
  • Provide accredited training for professionals so they can offer sleep support to the people they work with

The Sleep Charity achieves these goals through targeted programs that train those who work with families and in the workplace. They offer online courses for parents, carers, professionals, workplace personnel, and school personnel. Many of the courses are designed for participants to learn and then teach others. For example, the Workplace Sleep Ambassador course is for senior management, HR executives, wellbeing leads, or those with an interest in sleep. The idea being that they would take the knowledge gained back to the workplace and share it with others. Furthermore, businesses can prioritize their staffs’ sleep by signing a charter to commit to consider:

  • How to tackle fatigue and sleep deprivation in the workplace
  • Adopting a cultural change within your business
  • How to start taking appropriate responsibility for your employees’ health and wellbeing
  • Create a Staff Sleep Strategy (SSS)
  • Ensure that employees have access to sleep education

The Sleep Charity strives to bring the importance of sleep to the forefront with a Sleep Manifesto aimed at government officials to address the sleep crisis and improve sleep understanding in the United Kingdom.

A variety of other helpful sleep materials including a national sleep helpline and podcasts, can be accessed on their website. Check it out https://thesleepcharity.org.uk/
